Why ‘the world’s most dangerous city’ is actually one of the most livable in the world

The world’s deadliest city is actually a place with a higher than average rate of violent crime, according to a new report from Bloomberg Intelligence.

The city of New York’s homicide rate, for example, was one of 20 cities with an average murder rate of over 21 per 100,000 residents in 2016, according the report, “The World’s Most Dangerous Cities.”

While New York City has a much lower murder rate than most major U.S. cities, the city has seen an increase in violent crime since the fall of 2016, as the FBI reported.

The FBI reported that the number of homicides increased by 13 percent between 2016 and 2017, and by 30 percent in 2018.

“Violent crime has increased dramatically in New York over the past year and is currently on track to surpass the violent crime rate of the city’s historic peak of 3,100 homicides in the 1990s,” Bloomberg Intelligence wrote.

“The city’s crime rate remains among the highest in the country, and the number and type of violent crimes in the city have risen substantially since the end of the Great Recession.”

“The NYPD and the Department of Justice continue to make progress against violent crime in New york, and we remain focused on stopping violent crime and helping the city to achieve its potential as a world-class city,” a spokesperson for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.

“While we have many challenges and a long way to go, we are making major progress toward restoring New York to its former glory, and are on track for achieving this goal in the near future,” the statement added.

Bloomberg Intelligence said New York saw an average of 11 homicides per 100K people between January and June of 2018, which was up from 10 homicides per 50K people in 2017.

The report found that New York is home to some of the world’s largest gun-owning populations, with an estimated 17.7 million guns in circulation.

While New Yorkers are not the only ones to enjoy the wealth of guns, Bloomberg Intelligence said there were a number of gun-related crimes that took place in the state.

There were a total of 14,732 homicides in New Jersey between January 2018 and June 2018, according, the report.

New York also had one of America’s highest rates of non-fatal shootings in the U.K. with an annual average of more than 500 per year between 2014 and 2016.
